The video of a red Chevrolet Onix that started moving on its own and suddenly caught fire is leaving internet users puzzled.

The incident occurred in late September in Porto Seguro, Bahia, in northeastern Brazil. The clip, shared on social media, shows the car, without a driver, beginning to move on its own just before it was engulfed in flames.

According to local media reports, the Fire Department was called and the fire was quickly controlled. The incident caused no injuries, but so far, the vehicle’s owner has not been located.

Despite the seemingly supernatural aspect of the case, the phenomenon can be explained by an unintended activation of the starter motor, which is responsible for starting the car. “It can happen that the ignition contact gets stuck due to wear,” explained mechanical engineer Renato Neves to the site UOL.

According to him, if the contact remains stuck, it is only a matter of time before a short circuit occurs, which could explain the flames. “If the vehicle is in gear, it will start moving,” he added.
